The City of Sheffield is a metropolitan borough located in South Yorkshire. The city began life as a settlement in a field on the banks of the River Sheaf, resulting in the name Sheffield. In 1296 a market was founded in Castle Square and led to the beginnings of a market town.
As early as the 14th Century Sheffield was a renowned knife producer and by 1600 it was the country's epicentre of cutlery making. Thus the city has always been famous for its tradition in the steel making industry. Although not as significant on the world stage for steel production due to overseas supplies, the City of Sheffield does in fact produce more today than ever in its history. However, due to increased mechanisation the employment figures are drastically reduced.
From a geographical perspective Sheffield lies at the convergence of several rivers, and surrounded by hills. With more trees per person (over 2 million in the city) than any other city in Europe, many square miles of national park, 78 public parks and over 10 square miles of woodland, Sheffield truly is a naturally green city.
